Subtitle: The Aether of Post-modern Physics
Historically, physics now has two different propositions of the aether. The first is the aether of classical physics while the second is the aether of post-modern physics.
I usually speak of both of them, and I also make the effort to distinguish between the classical aether and the post-modern aether. But this article is set aside to discuss more deeply the distinctions between the classical aether and the post-modern aether.
This is important as it has become a common conviction that the aether does not exist as modern relativity has proved. So, for the aether of post-modern physics to boast of being the true nature of the aether, then it must have differences from the classical aether which were not known before and that are very important in this article.
To begin to address this, I will start by saying that the classical aether was also called the luminiferous aether. The luminiferous aether was assumed to be the medium for the propagation of light.
This conception of the aether was a simple result of wave physics which informs us that there must be a medium in which a wave moves. So, the classical aether was taken as the medium in which light waves move in the universe.
This was the central understanding of the aether in classical physics and it was why it was absolutely necessary in classical physics. For in classical physics, we could not assume that a wave moves without a medium as it is now the tradition in physics.
Furthermore, this luminiferous aether was assumed to be at rest in the universe and that it was made of a very tenuous material that was impossible to be detected by matter as it moves in or through it.
When we combine the fact that the luminiferous aether is at rest and that it was made of a very tenuous material, we begin to see why it was an acceptable and general notion in classical physics that the aether was not detectable.
But we must bear in mind that the classical physicists held on to the existence of the aether despite the fact that it was questionable because of the underlying understanding that there cannot be a light wave without a medium in which it propagates.
It was only through the revolution of modern physics or would I rather say modern relativity, that physicists began to appreciate the real and different nature light has from any other kind of wave in the universe and which has been further advanced by post-modern physics.
So, I have mentioned two characters of the classical aether, one of which is that it was the medium for the propagation of light and the second is that it was stationary or at rest.
Now, the third and which is very important is that the classical aether was attached to Newton’s absolute space and time. Whatever description the aether had, it was attached to absolute space and time as described by Sir Isaac Newton.
This understanding is important because of how the post-modern aether is different from the classical aether in this regard.
I have just presented the three characteristic natures of the aether of classical physics and how classical physicists understood it. I want you to take note of this because a phenomenon may be discarded or proved to be non-existent not because it is non-existent but because of a wrong understanding of it, which sadly has been the case for the aether.
The only attribute important for physics, though it was wrong, that we can place on the classical aether is that it was the medium for the propagation of light. The other remaining two attributes did not really satisfy physics to an appreciable measure of truth.
But in post-modern physics, we find a new understanding of the aether which is true. In post-modern physics, the aether is no longer the medium for the propagation of light rather it is another non-mechanical wave in the universe just like light and I have decided to call it the gravi-electromagnetic wave because it is constituted of light and gravity.
Furthermore, the post-modern aether is not at rest or stationary like the classical aether, though it is still a stationary field.
At this point, I know that I must have confused you a little. Let me make you understand this important distinction between the aether of classical physics and the one of post-modern physics.
In classical physics, the aether is stationary in that it is at rest, but in post-modern physics, the aether is stationary in that it is a standing field. I hope you can now see the difference between the stationary aether of classical physics and the one of post-modern physics.
The classical aether is at what we will call non-dynamic rest but the post-modern aether is at dynamic rest being a standing gravi-electromagnetic field. I want you to have this understanding because I would show in my future scientific articles that it is connected to some of the important results of gravi-electrodynamics.
In addition, the aether of post-modern is not attached to Newton’s absolute space and time but to the post-modern absolute space and time which their nature is different from the Newtonian description.
The aether is real and we cannot understand its nature without understanding or attaching it to the real nature of absolute space and time. This seems to be one of the ways in which the classical physicists were at least right in their approach towards unravelling the mystery of the aether.
Also, both the classical and the post-modern aethers are stationary, though in different ways, but this also tells us that the classical physicists were right in their approach towards unravelling the mystery of the aether though they were wrong in their actual conceptions of it.
So, if you look, the post-modern description of the aether on the surface seems similar to the classical description and this is only because the classical physicists were right in their approach towards unravelling the mystery of the aether but only the post-modern description comes closest to the truth about the aether.
Physics cannot continue any longer without the aether. The aether has become an absolute necessity in physics even Einstein made the suggestion that the aether is necessary especially for his theory of general relativity.
Let me now outline the three differences between the classical aether and the post-modern aether.
1. The classical aether as the medium for the propagation of light is a luminiferous aether but the post-modern aether is a non-mechanical wave just like light.
2. The classical aether is non-dynamically stationary in that it is at rest but the post-modern aether is dynamically stationary in that it is a standing gravi-electromagnetic field.
3. The classical aether is attached to Newton’s absolute space and time but the post-modern aether is attached to the post-modern absolute space and time.
The above are the three major differences between the classical aether and the post-modern aether as derived from what has been discussed so far in this article.
I want you to take note of them and to also see how post-modern physics is returning us once again and for all time to the aether which even the ancients referred to as the fifth element in the universe.
Surprisingly, the post-modern aether has the same independence as it had when it was conceived in the ancient world before classical physics.
In ancient philosophy, the aether was the fifth element separate from the other four elements, water, fire, air and earth, and it was conceived to be the upper air that holds all the other elements together.
It is the same for the post-modern aether which is the non-mechanical wave from which all forms of matter was formed and which holds all forms of matter together. And remember that all forms of matter, in this case, refers to the four elements: water, fire, air and earth.
This is one of the ways in which post-modern physics is about the great consummation that is bringing together every truth conceived about the universe since the beginning of human existence.
The importance of the aether cannot be overemphasized. Without the aether, we cannot come to the true understanding of the nature of the unified field that holds all existence and any other concept introduced to replace the aether cannot stand.
We have to know this and apply ourselves towards understanding the true nature of the aether as post-modern physics has commenced. There is no other way that we can understand the universe without the aether and also open science up for immense possibilities.
Finally, the luminiferous, non-reactive, static aether that is attached to Newton’s absolute space and time is no longer existent in physics and it has now been completely replaced by the non-mechanical, reactive, standing aether that is attached to the post-modern absolute space and time.
