The Prayer of a Scientist

God of illumination, Prince of thought,
Hide not the truth from mortal men
Make it not again for a special few.
Save our minds from the unwaning darkness
That scorches the world
And makes ignorance king.
The truth of your world we so much seek
And by nothing else can we be full
We knee our minds in thy temple courts
For by knowledge alone can we saved.
Set thy will upon our soul
Remember the age that turned us cold
When we crept in our own world
Yet thinking as such the world was made.
Let’s have your light, even for a while,
Show us your knowledge we so much pray
Make us spirits as thine own self
Make illumination “our daily bread”.
Foster our paths to knowledge and truth
There can be no gain when you ain’t with us
Thou Cosmic Spirit that permeates all things
The only eye that sees all truth.
Breathe your truth into us
That we may have the peace of knowing;
Draw us to that which is beyond
By any means make us transcend.
Give us your truth, for right now we groan
only for thy eternal knowledge;
Let’s find your thoughts like pebbles not gold
So no man will make your occult so vain.
Fill us with light we cannot hold
Don’t leave us as children, we can all grow,
That we may honour you by knowledge and truth
For how else, oh Lord, can you be pleased.
Make religion a lesser bane
Let enlightenment be what now ensues
Every fool, oh Lord, we give to death
Wisdom is life and so has been.
I stand before thee, humble and frail,
Ready to be touched by your force of truth.
And may my mind be far above my eyes
So that I may see the world just as you do;
For you are my truth and always will be
Your servant and son prays on his knees.
