Note: The term “body” in this article applies to both ponderable (non-charged) and electrical (charged) bodies. The two manifestations of mass to be discussed is a universal phenomenon.
While it may not come as a surprise to you that mass exists in the universe, it should, however, come as a surprise to you that mass has two forms, one is rest mass and the other is inertial mass.
Now, this article seeks to explicitly inform you about why we have both forms of mass in the universe. This has been a mystery since classical physics and Newton’s laws of motion recognize these two forms of mass.
Newtonian mechanics informs us that a form of mass called rest mass is what is involved for all bodies at rest relative to an observer and that another form of mass called inertial mass is what is involved during acceleration, especially non-gravitational acceleration.
However, classical physics also informs us that for a body, its gravitational mass and inertial mass are equivalent. This classical principle is called the weak equivalence principle. Now, gravitational mass which is the mass involved in gravitational accelerations has become replaced by rest mass in the post-modern weak equivalence principle.
Thus, the post-modern weak equivalence principle states that rest mass and inertial mass are equivalent. I will discuss in a future article why this revision of the weak equivalence principle has occurred in physics, but you must know that without these revisions of the weak and even of the strong equivalence principles we would not have arrived at the universal equivalence principle which their synthesis.
So, historically, we now have two weak equivalence principles which are the classical weak equivalence principle and the post-modern weak equivalence principle. The same situation also applies to the strong equivalence principle which now has the modern and the post-modern versions.
Now, in this article, I will explain the true cause of rest mass and inertial mass based on the post-modern weak equivalence principle and this is as since classical physics, we have not been able to explain how these two forms of mass of a body manifest themselves.
Classical physics does not explain to us how and why a body will manifest its rest mass in one condition, and in another condition manifest its inertial mass. This in itself has been a mystery.
Now, this article re-accentuates and brings to our notice again the mystery of rest mass and inertial mass. It seeks to address once and for all why there are two forms of mass in the universe.
Post-modern physics resolves this mystery by proposing another principle which does not relegate either the principle of weak equivalence or the principle of strong equivalence, but rather makes them equal. This new post-modern principle which I have mentioned above is the principle of universal equivalence.
This principle informs us that the weak equivalence principle and the strong equivalence principle are equal. As modern physics misconstrues, the strong equivalence principle is not really an extension of the weak equivalence principle, and it is not in any way better than it.
And the equality of the post-modern versions of these two principles results in the encompassing principle of universal equivalence. I want you to understand the new role or consequences of the strong equivalence principle in post-modern physics.
The strong equivalence principle no longer extends or generalizes the weak equivalence principle as modern physics supposes, rather, the strong equivalence principle is equal to the weak equivalence principle. The strong equivalence principle is no longer a greater or better principle than the weak equivalence principle, both are now equal.

This universal equality of the weak and the strong equivalence principles is what completely demystifies the true cause of rest mass and inertial mass. And in addition to that, the principle of universal equivalence comes as a result of a deeper relativistic phenomenon in the universe.
This relativistic phenomenon is that no matter how fast a body accelerates it cannot accelerate greater than the acceleration of gravity g (which we now know in post-modern physics is simply a component of gravi-electromagnetic wave).
The entire mystery of the existence of rest mass and inertial mass is as a result of the newly discovered truth that no body can accelerate greater than gravity. So, whatever your acceleration may be, the acceleration of gravity is always greater.
Since gravity is inextricable from mass, the implication of gravity being the acceleration limit of the universe would have a direct consequence on mass. The mechanism by which gravity accelerates greater than any other accelerating body is different from the mechanism by which light travels at a constant speed that is greater than that of any other speeding body.
What is this difference? The difference is that while light speeds greater than every other body by c, gravity accelerates greater than any other body by rest gravity gr. And while the magnitude c is not apparently related to mass, the magnitude gr is related to mass.
Now, rest gravity, which is the proportion by which the acceleration of gravity is greater than the acceleration of a body, is what directly causes the existence of rest mass. This relationship between rest gravity and rest mass as the principle of universal equivalence shows is inextricable, and for this reason, one can state unequivocally that rest mass exists because of rest gravity. Notice the relationship.
And on the other hand, the acceleration of a body which when summed with rest gravity gives us the acceleration of gravity, is what directly causes inertial mass. This relationship between acceleration and inertial mass, as the universal equivalence principle shows, is inextricable, and for this reason, one can also state unequivocally that inertial mass exists because of (inertial) acceleration.
It may seem like an already obvious thing that inertial mass and acceleration are related, but I want you to see how this is as a result of the fact that no accelerating body can accelerate greater than gravity.
In other times and especially in classical physics, this relationship between inertial mass and acceleration had not been founded on its true cause which has been stated in the above paragraph.
Post-modern physics now informs us that accelerating bodies accelerate in an effort to accelerate greater than the acceleration of gravity, just as they move uniformly in an effort to speed greater than the speed of light.
I want you to see the intent of accelerated motion and the similarity between accelerated motion and uniform motion. Also, notice how I apply the term “acceleration” and its close variants to gravity and how i apply the term “speed” and its close variants to light. I do this so that you can apparently see the principle of gravi-electrodynamics.
Bodies don’t just accelerate blindly. They are attempting to accelerate greater than the acceleration of gravity and this results in the existence of rest mass and inertial mass in the universe. Listen, without this fact, there will be no such things as rest mass and inertial mass. This is what I really want you to learn from this article.
Now, let me state the universal equivalence principle for mass in a diagrammatic manner which explicitly shows you how rest mass is related to rest gravity and how inertial mass is related to acceleration.
In the above diagram, rest equality represents the relationship between rest mass mr of a body and rest gravity gr, while inertial equality represents the relationship between inertial mass mi and acceleration a.
The new description of rest equality reinforces and redefines our already known understanding of inertial equality. It is important to now understand how both rest and inertial interactions have become governed by Newton’s inverse square law as shown above.
The above diagram sums the true cause of rest mass and inertial mass. A body’s inertial mass mi is responsible for its inertial effects on any other body, while its rest mass mr is responsible for its rest effects on any other body. Rest effects describe the experiences of any other body at rest on body mr.
